From download to your first task

You need a supported Windows computer and access to Codex or Claude Code. BMD is free during the beta and needs no card. Provider subscriptions and API usage are separate charges.

1. Install BMD. Open the installer and follow its steps. Keep your project folder separate from the application folder. Open BMD, choose Start BMD on the welcome screen, then open Build.
2. Check your agent. Open Set up or check your agent. Choose Codex or Claude Code and follow its Official setup guide to install and sign in. Restart BMD after installing the provider, then select Check setup. A detected sign-in does not guarantee access to a model.
3. Add a project. Create a new folder named BMD-first-run. In Build, open Add or choose a project. Use Choose folder under Project folder, then Preview project and Initialize and add project. BMD adds its .bmd setup files. Git is optional; this step does not start an agent.

These labels were checked against BMD 3.47.16. If your version differs, use its release notes above.

Try one file in a new folder

In your BMD-first-run folder, save a plain text file named notes.txt with these three lines. In Notepad, choose All files when saving so the name stays notes.txt.

Project: Garden checklist.
Ready: The seed list is complete.
Next: Choose a planting date.

The result I want

Read notes.txt in this project. Draft a short handoff using only its facts. Include what is ready, the next step, and any missing information. Cite notes.txt. Do not change any project files.

What a good result has (optional)

Preserve all three facts. Do not invent a planting date or other details. Cite notes.txt.

Leave Let the agent change files unchecked. Choose your Agent, then Start task. This asks for a document; it does not give the agent permission to edit your project.

Check the result

In Deploy, under Saved work, choose Open result. A handoff that names Garden checklist, says the seed list is complete, and lists choosing a planting date as the next step. It should say the planting date is not provided and cite notes.txt.

Compare the answer with notes.txt yourself. A saved answer is not independent proof that it is correct. Documents save automatically in Reports/Patrix/Agent-Results/ under your configured notes folder, not your project folder. The result view shows the saved path. Use Export Markdown to keep a copy elsewhere, or Use in next task to carry it forward.

If the first task stops

• Agent missing or signed out: return to Set up or check your agent. Follow the setup guide, sign in, restart BMD, then Check setup.
• Task failed, stopped, or has an unknown state: read the reason before using Prepare retry. Check provider access and usage limits first.
• Answer has the wrong facts: choose Revise this result and name the mistake. Keep notes.txt as the reference.

If you have an optional paid plan, open Activate in BMD and confirm the code in your account. Your account also provides an access file for offline activation.
